The final kilometre of stage 16
Hugo Houle’s win for his brother
Hugo Houle won the sixteenth stage of the Tour de France. On the stage between Carcassonne and Foix, the Canadian of Israel-Premier Tech was part of the big break of the day. At the foot of the last climb he broke away from the leading group while teammate Michael Woods protected his attack, before finishing solo.
Japanese Pogačar fans at the start
Tour boss, Christian Prudhomme: “The first day in the Pyrenees could be a good moment for breakaway riders… provided that they’re well equipped to deal with the mountains, of course. To celebrate victory in Foix, the riders will first have to deal with the climb to the Port de Lers and then make their move on the Mur de Péguère. The 20 or so kilometres from the summit towards the administrative centre of the Ariège aren’t particularly testing.”

A very emotional with for Houle
Stage winner, Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech): “I never won a race. I guess it was the right place to win my first race! I attacked to set it up for Michael Woods. I went full gas. I hanged on and suffered in the steep climb. I knew that with 30’’ or 40’’ lead at the top, I could do it. It was still a long time to go with an advantage of only 20’’ but I never gave up. In the technical sectors, I gained some time. I was afraid to cramp towards the. I missed some food because I had no assistance car in the last 20km. To win a race was a dream I had for my brother who dies ten years ago. I’ve work for him for years, it’s incredible. I don’t know what to say.”
It was also Hugo Houle’s first road win (non TT)
Vingegaard and Pogačar finished together
