On Jan. 29, 2022, Olympian Nick Willis set a new world record for the longest active running streak at the Millrose Games. His mile time of 3:59.71 meant that for the 20th consecutive year, he’d completed the distance in under 4 minutes. It was also the 63rd sub-4 performance of his career.
A sub-4-minute mile is something many can’t pull off in their prime, and prevailing attitudes suggest that speed declines in middle age. But Willis, 38, might argue that his age, or accumulated experience, has only served to benefit his performance throughout the years.
