Robbie McEwen on Jonas Vingegaard

[ad_1]

The 2022 Tour de France is coming to an end this weekend, and after 22 days and 18
stages it is looking like we know the winner. Jonas Vingegaard won stage 18 yesterday and is now closing in on an overall victory, just two more days to get through for his first Tour de France win.

However, heading into this year’s Tour it was his teammate, Primoz Roglic, that the world was talking about the most heading into the Tour. Roglic actually has a history of falling off in important races, it happened last year, and it happened again this year. So why was Jonas Vingegaard overlooked?

According to Robbie McEwen, former green jersey winner and Australian cycling legend, he wasn’t. In an interview with Betway Insider, Robbie reveals that in amongst insiders and riders were actually saying Vingegaard over Roglic. “The world was talking more about his teammate, Primoz Roglic, but a lot of insiders, a lot of riders were saying, actually Vingegaard looks stronger. He probably could have ridden away from Roglic if he wanted to, but he’s played the team role” Robbie said.

He went on to discuss Roglic falling off in the big races, but can act as a “key ally for
Vingegaard to try and unseat Pogacar”.

It was going to take a lot to unseat Pogacar, and Robbie believed that it was “going to take not just cooperation from teammates, but it’s going to take almost an unspoken cooperation from different teams to take on Pogacar”.  And it looks like that has happened.
