Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) retained the pink jersey on stage 3 of the 2022 Giro d’Italia, on a day when there were no significant changes to the general classification.
After winning the opening stage and placing second in the stage 2 time trial, the Dutchman turned domestique on Sunday, helping to lead out Jakub Mareczko for the flat finish.
Mareczko finished fifth and Van der Poel 17th as Mark Cavendish (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) won the stage, beating Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) and Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) to the line.
Van der Poel retains his 11-second lead in the general classification over time trial winner Simon Yates (BikeExchange-Jayco), with Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma) still third at 16 seconds.
There was no movement in the top 70 places overall, and only minor shuffles below that, as 156 of the 176 starters finished in the same main bunch.
The Giro d’Italia pauses for its first rest day on Monday as the race transfers from Hungary to Italy, with the race starting again in Sicily on Tuesday for a summit finish on Mount Etna.
