In ‘Eulogy of a Steep Skier,’ Risking Avalanches for Epic Turns

[ad_1]

Looking for a video that takes you for a ride both thrilling and endearing? Look no further than this Norway ski adventure.

Like most great stories, the setup of this ski video is simple.

Pro skier Nikolai Schirmer decides to tackle Jiehkkevarri, the biggest mountain in Lyngen, Norway. Its enormous south face slopes down so steeply that even ski legend Andrea Fransson decided against trying it. (He then died shortly after on a slope he considered less dangerous.)

Schirmer and his partner Krister Kopala ultimately “part ways as they encounter a deadly avalanche season.” Their friendship offers some of this mini-documentary’s best moments.

“Last season, Nico got a girlfriend and he got soft,” Kopala said. “This season, he got dumped. And he got even softer.”

If this is “soft,” skiing, we can’t imagine what “hard” must be like.
