Readers’ Rig: This week we have a stunning ‘Readers’ Rig’ from Adnan Kadir in Portland: A Greg Lemond TVT in Z team livery. The bike is beautifully built with the correct Campagnolo C-Record Delta, Time pedals, Turbo saddle and Cinelli bars and stem. When did you buy it?
I didn’t buy it, actually. It was owned by an old friend of mine who had it for sale on consignment in a shop near his home. I kept asking him about it and one day in summer of 2021 he gifted it to me. I offered to pay for it, but he said, “no way – I know you’re going to cherish this bike.” It came with some 8-speed early Shimano 600 parts. I had all the C-Record parts, except for the bottom bracket (it uses BSA and most bikes from this era were ITA), seatpost, saddle, handlebars, and wheelset. A friend who used to own one of the Bay Area’s premier bike shops had a NOS bottom bracket, as well as the saddle, and wheelset. I found the seatpost, also NOS, on eBay. A friend here in Portland sourced the handlebars for me.
What made you choose this bike?
I have a poster of LeMond riding one of these on my workshop wall, and I have always coveted the TVT – built LeMonds. TVTs won every Tour de France from 1988 through 1991. In those days I was a student and could never have afforded one. When this fell into my lap, it was a dream come true. I suppose that, in the back of my mind, I had been slowly gathering the parts for the day I might find one.
These bikes were rare when they were made and it’s hard to 1) find one in good condition, and 2) find one in one’s correct size.
Have you done any modifications/additions to it?
Many people with bikes like this build them up in exactly the way LeMond would have ridden them. I wanted to stay true to the era, but I don’t really believe in bikes as showpieces. The first thing I did was give the frameset to Ruckus Composites here in Portland for inspection. They checked it and said that it was in excellent shape. That’s not often the case with alloy/carbon framesets after so many years. They also repaired a loose brake cable exit on the top tube.
How many miles/kilometers do you do a year?
About 10,000km each year, but this bike is reserved for sunny days in the summertime.
What do you love about this bike?
When I first rode it, I expected it to feel antiquated – heavy, flexible, and strange. Instead, the opposite is true – it’s a comfortable, smooth, and solid bike, even with 22mm tires on. I absolutely love riding it.
Favorite riding area?
That would have to be Chiang Mai, Thailand. The roads there are fantastic and the drivers patient and courteous. Also, the food is awesome and the living inexpensive.
Favorite riding experience on your bike?
Well, I have only had it complete long enough to put a few rides on it. So, that would have to be riding to the banh mi shop for lunch with my wife!
Future upgrades?
I may try to find an old San Marco Rolls saddle for it – that suits me better than the Turbo. Finding a freewheel with a 23 on it would be nice, because hills. Otherwise, I think I’ll just leave it as it is.
Last words?
Having more than one bike is a privilege and having a luxury bike like this even more so. Hopefully these are not actually my last words!
