Sometimes a Readers’ Rig doesn’t have to be a much loved heirloom or a custom bling machine, it could also be an off the rack new bike like today’s reader Jonathon from Oakland with his Giant TCR Advanced SL1. There’s nothing quite like that new bike feeling as Jonathon explains when he talks about his red and black beauty.
Name: Jonathan Hopwood
Location: Oakland, CA, USA
Bike: 2016 Giant TCR Advanced SL 1
Groupset: Shimano Ultegra 6870 Di2
Wheels: Giant SLR0
Pedals: Look Keo Blade 2 Ti
Saddle: Giant SLR Contact Forward
Other: Arundel Mandible
Weight: 6.8Kg
When did you buy it?
March 2016
What made you choose this bike?
It’s such a great all-round “GC” bike- light, stiff as hell, steady, yet ready to fall right over into a fast downhill turn. Oh, and dead sexy! Also, compared to the next highest bike in this tier, the SL 0, it’s EXACTLY the same bike- same frame, same wheels, same finishing kit- only Ultegra Di2 and not Dura-Ace Di2. The next bike down, the SL2, has same frame, but one tier down in wheels, and one tier down in finishing kit (SL not SLR), with mechanical Ultegra. For me,the SL1 was the sweetspot.
What modifications/additions have you done?
Rotor Q-Rings is it. Otherwise stock. Oh, and the Ass Saver for when it gets wet!
What components are you running?
Stock. The SLR0 wheels are the shiznit at a claimed 1331g for the set. The SLR Contact Forward saddle fits me well. The handlebar and stem are also the SLR series. I did put on some Specialized S-Works Turbo 26c tires.
How many miles/kilometers do you do a year?
Last year I rode about 2,000 miles. This year I’m already at about one thousand miles; I’ll probably get to about four thousand at year’s end.
What do you love about this bike?
Wow, what’s not to love? The stiffness, the lightness, the price point, the stock wheels are phenomenal, the responsiveness- it’s everything a “GC” should be.
Favorite riding area?
Well I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is a cyclists’ mecca. The Oakland Hills are awesome, the peninsula offers the Santa Cruz mountains and Highway 1 on the Pacific coast, and there are great climbs dotting the entire Bay Area, such as Old La Honda, Mt. Diablo, Mt. Hamilton, Mt. Tamalpias- really, too many to count.
Favorite riding experience on your bike?
Reaching goals, riding with friends, going farther/faster and pushing yourself more than you thought you could, the ebb and flow of seasons passing, the hum of rubber on asphalt, the clicking of gears, the gasping of breath… cycling is a holistic experience!
Future upgrades?
Right now, I can’t imagine this bike needing anything ever. Ok, maybe Sram eTap…
Last words?
On your hard days, go harder. On your easy days, go easier. Shout out to my club, Alto Velo Bicycle Racing Club, our title sponsor SunPower, and my coach, Dan Smith of Sportvelo.com!
An HTFU sticker for Jonathon’s stem for when he’s doing a bit of Frooming with his stem…
